Must Have Closet Staples

What is a closet staple?

A closet staple is a piece of clothing that you can pair with almost everything. This piece should be on weekly rotation in your wardrobe. It is most likely in a neutral colour (although it doesn't have to be), and can pair back with the other colours in your closet seamlessly. A closet staple is most likely a piece in your wardrobe that is simple, can be layered, mixed-and-matched and is suited to your personal style.

How many clothes do you actually need?

This entirely depends on who you are and what you do. Experts have noted that a total of 74 garments is sufficient. This includes six outfits for work, three outfits for home-wear, three outfits for sports, two outfits for festive occasions, plus four outdoor jackets and trousers or skirts. When it comes to closet essentials, these pieces should make up the majority of your wardrobe, while the rest should add a layer of personality, colour and edge.

The importance of finding your neutrals

Finding your neutrals is all about finding the colours that work for you. Neutral’s come in all different kinds of colours and hues. Traditionally, neutrals refer to shades such as black, white, grey and beige. These neutral tones work seamlessly with most colours, and therefore are the easiest pieces to pair back with your wardrobe. However, some people may be colour obsessed, and prefer bright and bold colours as their 'neutrals'. Some may find this easy, while others may struggle pairing colour back with more colour.

A neutral colour is personal to you, which is why we stock a large number of essential basics in both fashion and traditional 'core' colours so that you can find your perfect piece for you.

For the purpose of closet basics, we have chosen to talk specifically about traditional neutral tones like black, white and greys.

What staple pieces that I should have in my closet?

If you are unsure on what styles work best for you, or are in need of a little inspiration - don't worry because we have you covered! Below you will find a list of fantastic essential basics in neutral colours, fit for closet essentials.

Tops

Finding your closet essentials is all about finding the right style for you. Know what styles and silhouettes you gravitate towards the most.

For example, you may be someone who prefers an oversized, boxy fit and a draping silhouette. If this sounds like you, perhaps try something like the Mara top.

Have an understanding of all the different necklines, such as a scoop neck, v-neck and boatneck for example. Some people prefer a higher neckline to cover their chest, where are other find that a v-neckline accentuates their features and creates shape.

When it comes to choosing the right top as the perfect closet essential, have a look at the other pieces in your closet that you already own. Make sure that you tops you choose pair well with the bottoms in your closet.

For example, if you are something who wears a lot of skinner pants such as leggings and jeans, but prefer a bit more coverage on the bottom - try something like the Leanne Tunic. With an elegant, scooped neckline and long sleeves, it is longer in length that finishes around the mid-thighs - ideal for covering the hips and rear.

Skirts

When choosing the perfect skirt to add to your closet staples, it is important to choose something that will carry you through the seasons. This means it should be lightweight, but also has the ability for you to layer with tights or leggings in the wintertime as well as with winter tops and jumpers. For this, we love the Lana Skirt, as you can have the option to wear a tight fitted shirt, or opt for a billowy blouse draped over the top. For something with a little more shape but the same amount of sophistication, we love the Double Layer Tube Skirt and the Ruched Bamboo Skirt. Both of these skirts come with a fabric waistband which speaks ultimate comfort. These skirts are all so versatile, perfect for work, weekends and everything in between!

Pants

Pants are an essential item in anyone's closet, so it is important to choose pieces that suit you and your lifestyle. For someone who works for home, or is a busy mum who just prioritises comfort (without neglecting style), then incorporate the Softline Slouch Pants into your closet essentials. These pants have a relaxed fit, and are a great closet essential especially for their versatility. The pants softly cup the ankles with it's fabric band, allowing you to control the length of the pant. The soft fabric waistband can also be folded over, and looks great with oversized pieces that can be tucked, tied or left loose. For something that can be worn indoors, outdoors and offers the elegance of a skirt and the confidence of pants, try our Bamboo Culottes. This trans-seasonal basic will match back with every top in the Bamboo Body collection and can be styled multiple ways!
